WATERGATE OPERA

HATSTAND OPERA
A Laugh at the Opera
Saturday 14 June 2008

What better way to spend an English summers evening than in the delightful gardens of Watergate House deep in the Sussex Downs listening to beautiful voices and music, under the stars. Opera presented in the spirit of sharing, not set upon a distant pedestal. Opera in the most approachable and relaxing form; exciting, visually dynamic and definitely entertaining.

In the 18th century much of the music of great composers was written for performances in the homes of their patrons but it was in the late 19th century that the ‘soirée’ as we know it today developed. Hosts would entertain their guests before, during, or after dinner with a musical presentation. Hatstand Opera have done much to revive the tradition by presenting a programme packed with well-known arias and ensembles from opera, plus operetta, and songs from classic musicals. Each of these popular items can be sponsored and dedicated to chosen loved ones. (You can find out more about Hatstand Opera at their website,(www.hatstandopera.f2s.com)

This wonderful evening is in support the ‘West Sussex Association for Disabled People’ (www.wsad.org.uk).WSAD has been providing information, advice and services to disabled people for over 60 years with a small staff, backed by many volunteers and members. With 60 years of history it is recognised that although a lot of brilliant work has been done, there is still an enormous amount to achieve to improve services, rights and attitudes toward disabled people in West Sussex.
